4 Ways to Practice Self-Care

The business world for entrepreneurs is rewarding, demanding, stressful, and invigorating, sometimes all at the same time; and in the midst of it all, it’s easy to forget about self-care. This is a frequent occurrence of business owners and is especially true of women. As women, we have the tendency to care for others and forget about ourselves, but the fact of the matter is that in order to take care of others we must first care for ourselves, hence putting YOU, as a priority is an essential part of your success.

When you choose self-care, you are not being selfish; instead you are choosing to be responsible for your physical and emotional well-being. The truth is, until we find that inner happiness, we cannot be at our best. It’s time to put it all into perspective because self-care is exactly what is going to keep you at the top of your game and keep you rejuvenated so that you can help others.

Here are a few ways to put yourself first:

#1 Don’t take your physical and mental health for granted. If you’re not feeling well, allow yourself to stay home. Not only will you be much more effective if you allow yourself a day to recover rather than pushing through several days at half-speed because you’re close to burnout, but some downtime will help improve creativity and clarity.

#2 Everything can be done, as long as you prioritize. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle, which can cause us to put things off that we planned for ourselves. For example, how often did you work late and miss the workout date you had with a friend; or choose a quick fast food meal and eat on the go, rather than having a nutritional meal and sitting down to enjoy it. A simple way to overcome this habit of putting yourself last is to create a to-do list and place yourself at the top of it. Everything can be done that you must do if you organize it appropriately. Take a few moments to pinpoint those items that can wait. Put yourself on your calendar just as you would a standing work meeting and treat it as such, being sure that nothing interferes.

#3 Stop feeling selfish. Allowing yourself time to have fun, or scheduling that spa-day or massage is not being selfish. When you do that which rejuvenates you, you will be at your very best, which will enable you to be even more successful. Give yourself some TLC for a change. It’s not selfish.

#4 Lead by example. There’s nothing worse than being in an intense environment of multiple deadlines and short tempers. It’s easy for us to know we should take different approaches to provide a healthier work-life balance, but rarely do we make it happen. Be the one that does take that step forward and encourage others to do the same, better yet reward others in your business for achieving a work-life balance. One easy first step is to actually take a full vacation and not feel guilty about it and even go as far as urging your staff to do the same. One main reason people don’t take vacation they’ve earned is the feeling of guilt either out of low self-worth or because a boss is not supportive of it. Change this and lead by example.

Go against the grain. As a businesswoman, you’ve already done this and look where you are today. Continue down that path, maintaining focus but now take it further and put yourself first knowing it will ultimately provide you with the energy, self-confidence and focus to ensure you’re staying on top of your game in the business world.
